Savings for your future

Savings accounts are the simplest way to make your wealth grow a little, even if it is just to stay ahead of inflation. But what does a bank do with your money, once they have their hands on it?
Keywords: money
What?
Banks keep money in savings accounts, which they invest with the intention of making a profit on it. Of course they aim for more profit than they will have to pay on their savings accounts. The more money they can roll around in this scheme, the larger their profits.
Certain banks restrict themselves in the ways they use this savings money, for example to spark cultural development, or to support small businesses in developing countries, or perhaps environmentally sane initiatives.
The interest on this durable form of saving is comparable with the rates of a plain bank; the costs involved are also comparable. So why not take the chance to make your money talk -- talk for what you want to see done with it -- while it is accumulating interest?
Why?
Banks spend part of their money on stock markets. The companies that are registered on stock markets use this money to finance new initiatives. Investers are attracted to such initiatives with promises of high rises in the value of their investment, as well as with profit sharing.
The more profit a stock certificate makes, the more pleasant it is for a bank to invest in it. To grease their own wheels, companies therefore try to be as efficient as possible, usually at the expense of "free" things -- such as unaccounted environmental aspects.
Durable banks spend their money more wisely, without noticeable difference in result. This means you are not forced by anything to accept a bank that invests in nuclear power plants -- you can simply book your money to a better bank.
How?
There are two Dutch banks which invest durably, namely Triodos and ASN Bank. Both have existed for tens of years, and are highly transparant in the causes into which they invest your money.
